The View across the valley from the collection of Exclusive villas known as the Villa Luwak.  Luwak refers to the small civet animal that is famous for eating the coffee beans for their outer shell.  The coffee bean then passes through the digestive system of this animal exiting as a perfect but structurally different coffee bean.   These beans are then collected and sold to make a rare and exclusive type of coffee.  This coffee has built a world reputation for its taste and substance.  It is said that a coffee made from the civet bean can be purchased in New York at $45 per cup.

As for the villas named after this animal the Villa Luwak collection, they came to the market during November of this year (2011) and are situated on a hill just to the east of Ubud, approx 4km.  They are lucky in so far as they enjoy fantastic views across the rain forest and paddy fields below, you couldn't wish for a better place for a relaxing break in this marvelous artisan location known as Ubud. Each of the five villas are secluded and private within their own grounds, each has a pool which is furnished with the usual loungers and tables and chairs etc.

The main lobby area has all the facilities of a boutique hotel complete with initmate restaurant which enjoys the views across the valley. There is an additional pool main pool as part of the lobby area if you wish to mix with other guests during your stay here.

The Villa management team are well experienced in hospitality with many years service and know the value of a relaxing period of time that people so require when visiting Ubud.

Ubud is a short distance form the villa and the management provide a shuttle service to and from the centre of Ubud.  Ubud has built a reputation of being a place of stylish art and design, there are many boutiques with quality fabrics adorned with exclusive designs, you will also find many art shops from local and talented artists.  Equally important as this are is known for its many restaurants that each have there own style and location, some on river bank and valleys, others situated amongst rice fields etc.

These operators whether it be hotel rooms or holiday villas, they do not inspect, view or refer any property that they list, they also do not control the reviews that are put on their sites, I will explain this later, this practice is all very well when you are booking a Marriot, Hyatt or even staying 1 or 2 nights in Mildred’s B&B – I will explain later in the article why you should use a reputable Bali Private Villas agent in Bali and I will explain how to determine who is reputable and how you spot a back street one man band who has a glossy web address.

First should you want to book a Bali Private Villa or even a hotel room through these global companies, be-aware reviews on these global websites are often manufactured by the owners. An owner can book a room or villa at a low night in their week, say a Sunday, or during low season in their villa. Understand this; the hotel or Bali Private Villa operator set the price on these sites so a reduction in their rate followed by them booking a room or villa means they limit the commission that they pay to the global web-site room/villa listing site. Why would they do this? Simple really, they get an email as if they were a bone-fide guest asking them to review their accommodation, bingo a small price to pay for a glowing review of their own establishment.

The Bali Private Villas owners come from all walks of life but the dominant owners can be property developers who see a quick buck to develop villas for this burgeoning market. A property developer has no clue as to what the hospitality market needs so are often non responsive to the protestations of their incumbent Bali Private Villas guests, making the smallest of issue magnify in the minds of the guests such that they can spoil their holiday.

To add to the complexity, and don’t worry, all will be revealed as to how you seek the maximum protection just follow a few rules and you will have just the best holiday, Bali is, as I am sure like many destinations brimming with unlicensed Bali Private Villa agents offering villas. These agents often push properties that the licensed agents have dismissed as the property does not conform to hospitality standards.

Solution:

1) There is nothing wrong with a Bali Private Villas property being owned by a developer, a lawyer, a butcher, a baker, a candle stick maker (you get the picture). As long as their villa has been passed to a management company to operate it on a day to day basis. The management companies are invariably from the hospitality industry and know what linen to provide how often to change the bedding, towels etc, they know that if you order a fruit basket they are to provide that basket at a time that you asked for it, They know when to clean the rooms and when to give you peace and quiet. They make sure that the TV’s are tuned and that the remote is clean, they know when to remove lime from the shower head or polish the taps, to provide mineral water and so it goes on… Rule number 1. Make sure your Bali Private Villa is managed properly and by those in the know.

2) Never go to an unlicensed Bali Private Villas agent. Licensed agents have spent good money to establish a reputable business, to register their company. These agents on the whole rely on word of mouth to build their reputations. They’re pursued by the villa management companies to offer their properties so an entry on the licensed agents books comes with a guarantee of a certain standard. The reputable agent will inspect the villas prior to the arrival of any of their guests. Complaints are encouraged to be directed to the agent and if the Bali Private Villa management are in anyway non-responsive then these villas are removed from their listings.

Which means that unlicensed operators pick these Bali Private Villas up and then market them – be aware these are second tier properties. These second tier properties also find their way onto these global hotel booking web-sites as they to do not do an inspection of the property.

Rates are usually the same across all of the Bali Private Villa providers; whether it is a purported site that only says that they offer Late rates, one villa manager here on Bali said to me “they put higher rates on theses sites so late comers pay more”, or whether you risk an unlicensed agent or whether you go to a licensed operator – the rates are often the same.

Once established in your luxury villa, you will find Bali’s climate to be conducive to holidaying, to be relaxing. This lush tropical climate enjoys both the burning sun as well as a gentle sea breeze that will lift the air such that it will feel pleasant, making Bali feel light and airy.  As with any tropical location you will be awash with colour from the many flowers that this area produces, not least the Frangipani flower which is as much a part of Bali as Hinduism is.

The Hindu faith is a dominant and well respected religion here on Bali, as it drives their every action and behaviour.  For Hindu’s they must on a daily basis make an offering to the gods and this will done across the whole of Bali, at many temples, driveways, places of work, kitchens and even on the stove.  This is to ensure that the Balinese are blessed in all of their activities throughout that day.  The blessing, and I am not an expert, will consist primarily of flowers a small biscuit, an Incense stick that will gently smoulder, all of this is then neatly presented on a tray made from a banana leaf, this would then be offered to the gods, with a gentle sprinkle of symbolic pure water.  A small prayer would be said to ask for guidance and support throughout the day. That prayer would be waved to its intended source with a gentle swipe from the back of the hand.

Bali has many attractions as well as activities, for the adventurous, the explorer, the conservationist as well as an abundance of unique, quality facilities for those who wish to just relax and soak up the rays whilst here on this paradise Island.

When booking a villa holiday on Bali always follow a basic rule; 

Never go to an unlicensed agent, licensed agents have spent good money to establish a reputable business, to gain a registration from the government which monitors there behaviour. These agents rely on word of mouth to build their reputations. And they're pursued by the villa management companies encouraging them to offer their properties, an entry on the licensed agent’s website comes with a guarantee of a certain standard. The professional registered agent will inspect the villas regularly.  An important step is that they will inspect the villa prior to the arrival of any of their guests. Complaints when necessary are encouraged to be directed to the agent and if the villa management are in anyway non-responsive then these villas are removed from the professional agents listings.

Which means; unlicensed agents of which there are many, pick these villas for their websites then market them - these are second tier properties. These second tier properties also find their way onto global hotel booking web-sites, these sites do not do an inspection of the property.  I recently heard of a case where the electric was off during the middle of a hot night, causing the AC to switch off.  The electric contract was via a prepaid arrangement.

Most probably rates are the same across all the providers of luxury villas.  However, I experienced from one villa management company that they increase rates for these sites as they believe the brand is already there giving the appearance of “late deal” rates, the perception is that the rate is low so for them they market higher so late comers pay more".  If you do risk an unlicensed agent or whether you go to a licensed operator, the rates are often the same.
